History of the Department
The Department was established simultaneously with the Division of Russian Language and Literature at the Faculty of History and Philology in 1948. Initially, it was called the Department of the Russian Language and was responsible for teaching all linguistic disciplines at the Faculty of Russian Language and Literature, as well as Russian language courses at other faculties.
In 1963, it was divided into two departments: the Department of Russian and Slavic Linguistics and the Department of Russian Language (Interfaculty). In the 1980s, the Department employed eight staff members, including seven Candidates of Sciences: T.I. Bodrova, A.A. Gorbachevsky, T.E. Pometun (since 1954), I.A. Filippovskaya (since 1952), P.A. Klubkov, V.S. Ushakovsky, M.V. Shamsieva, and one Assistant – L.I. Stepenkova (later – Associate Professor) .
At different times, the Department was staffed by distinguished scholars, including:
G.I. Kolyada, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor – a prominent specialist in the history of book printing among the Eastern Slavs;
S.D. Arzumanov, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor – specialist in Iranian lexicology and comparative grammar;
A.K. Vlasov (1910–1982), Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Russian and Slavic Linguistics (1957–1978), specialist in General and Slavic Linguistics and the history of the Russian language;
B.I. Kazakov, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Department (1969–1972);
A.A. Nikolsky, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor (later Head of the Department at Ryazan Pedagogical Institute), specialist in the history of the Russian literary language and the syntax of spoken Russian.
From 1992 to 1994, the Department was headed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor M.B. Nagzibekova.
With the establishment of the Russian-Tajik (Slavic) University, the Faculty was reorganized, and the Department began its work within the Faculty of Philology (1996–2007), under the leadership of Professor M.B. Nagzibekova, Doctor of Philological Sciences.
In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan (No. 6609, February 15, 1997), Tajik State University was granted the status of a National University.
At present, the Department is headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Gulnora G. Shosafarova. The Department takes pride in its leading specialists: Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor L.T. Ruziyeva; Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor S.E. Negmatov; Candidates of Philological Sciences, Associate Professors H.I. Ikromzoda, L.V. Ashmarina, G.G. Shosafarova, R.N. Babaeva, S.S. Sharipova; Senior Lecturer F.K. Makhmudova (with long-standing experience); and Junior Assistant Z.A. Buranova, who all contribute to the education of future philologists and teachers of Russian language and literature.
Educational Activity
The primary mission of the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology is the training of teachers of Russian language and literature.
Since 2010, the Department has offered a Master’s program in “Russian Language and Literature”, licensed by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan. In the same year, the Department launched a joint Master’s program within the CIS Network University, in collaboration with the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University), also in “Russian Language and Literature”.

Academic and Methodological Activities
The Department includes a Scientific and Methodological Council (SMC), which conducts scholarly and methodological review of manuscripts prepared by the faculty for publication. Within the framework of the methodological seminar, monthly reports and presentations are delivered and discussed on current issues in linguistic and pedagogical disciplines. Faculty members share their teaching experience, demonstrate effective methods of organizing academic work, and introduce colleagues to the latest methodological literature.
The Student Scientific Society (SSS) unites students of all years of the Faculty of Russian Philology. Its members organize thematic evenings, musical and literary performances in Russian, and publish wall newspapers dedicated to significant dates. The linguistic student circle “Linguist” is supervised by Associate Professor R.N. Babaeva.
Research Activity
The Department carries out research within the field of Philological Sciences on the topic: “General and Comparative Linguistics in the Context of the Republic of Tajikistan.”
The results of this research include the publication of monographs, textbooks, and methodological guides, as well as scientific and methodological articles that assist students in preparing essays, reports, term papers, and creative works.
Faculty members review textbooks, monographs, dissertations, teaching and methodological manuals published both in Tajikistan and abroad.
The Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology is one of the leading departments of the University. Over the past three years, more than ten Candidate dissertations in specialty 5.9.8 (Theoretical, Applied, and Comparative Linguistics) have been discussed and recommended for defense.

International Cooperation
The Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology actively cooperates with both foreign and domestic academic institutions and journals. The Department admits students and Master’s candidates from foreign countries. Faculty members regularly publish in scholarly journals of Russia and the CIS.

SHOSAFAROVA GULNORA GULMAKHMADOVNA
Head of the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology
Born on October 12, 1973. From 1990 to 1995, she studied at K. Juraev Dushanbe State Pedagogical University (now named after S. Aini). From 1995 to 2003, she worked as an assistant at the University’s Department of the Russian Language. After completing her postgraduate studies, in 2003 she worked as a senior lecturer at the Department of the Russian Language for Non-Philological Faculties of Tajik National University.
In 2013, she defended her PhD dissertation on the topic “Simple Two-Member Narrative Sentences in the Tajik and Russian Languages” at the Dissertation Council of the Russian-Tajik (Slavonic) University, specializing in 10.02.20 — Comparative-Historical, Typological, and Contrastive Linguistics.
She is the author of more than 50 scientific articles, methodological guides, and textbooks. From 2016 to 2022, she worked as an Associate Professor at the Department of the Russian Language for Non-Philological Faculties of Tajik National University.
She has been awarded the “Excellence in Education and Science of Tajikistan” medal.

Brief Information:
Born on March 4, 1989, in Farkhor District, Khatlon Region, Tajikistan. From 2007 to 2012, he studied at Yelets State University, Faculty of Philology. From 2013 to 2014, he worked as a specialist in the Department of International Cooperation at the Migration Service under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.
In 2014, he entered the postgraduate program at Tajik National University (TNU) and successfully defended his candidate’s dissertation ahead of schedule in 2016. Until 2017, he worked as a lecturer at the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology, Faculty of Russian Philology, TNU.
In 2018, he became the winner of the international competition “Young Scientists of the CIS Countries” and was awarded a First Degree Diploma (Russian Federation).
In 2021, he was awarded the title “Excellence in Education and Science of Tajikistan.”
In 2022, he participated in the most prestigious competition for young researchers — the Ismoili Somoni Award — and won. He received the winner’s diploma personally from the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the highly respected Emomali Rahmon.

Ruziyeva Lola Tolibovna
Professor of the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology, Tajik National University
Born on November 26, 1960, in Dushanbe. She is Tajik by nationality and holds a higher education degree. In 1982, she graduated from Tajik State University named after V.I. Lenin (now Tajik National University), Faculty of Russian Language and Literature, with a specialization in Philology — Teacher of Russian Language and Literature. After graduation, she remained at the faculty as an assistant at the Department of Russian Language for Foreign Students. She defended her Candidate’s and later Doctoral dissertations.
Currently, she holds a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences degree and works as a Professor at the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology. She is the author of more than 100 scientific articles and methodological manuals.

Negmatov Sa’dullodzhon Ergashevich
Professor of the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology
Born on January 26, 1950, in Leninabad. He is Tajik by nationality and holds a higher education degree. In 1970, he graduated from Leninabad State Pedagogical Institute named after S.M. Kirov (now B. Gafurov Khujand State University), specializing in Philology — Teacher of Russian Language and Literature.
He holds a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences degree and currently works as a Professor at the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology. He is the author of textbooks and has written more than 100 scientific articles and methodological manuals

Ashmarina Lyudmila Vladislavovna
Associate Professor of the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology
Born on October 29, 1951, in Chelyabinsk. She is Russian by nationality and holds a higher education degree. In 1974, she graduated from Tajik State University named after V.I. Lenin (now Tajik National University), Faculty of Russian Language and Literature, specializing in Philology — Teacher of Russian Language and Literature. After graduation, she remained at the faculty as an assistant at the Department of Russian Language.
She defended her Candidate’s dissertation. Currently, she holds a Candidate of Philological Sciences degree and works as an Associate Professor at the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology. She is the author of more than 100 scientific articles and methodological manuals.

Sharipova Saodat Saydulloevna
Associate Professor of the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology
Born on February 14, 1962, in Dushanbe. She is Tajik by nationality and holds a higher education degree. In 1984, she graduated from Tajik State University named after V.I. Lenin (now Tajik National University), Faculty of Russian Language and Literature, with a specialization in Philology — Teacher of Russian Language and Literature. After graduation, she remained at the faculty as an assistant at the Department of Russian Language for Foreign Students.
She defended her Candidate’s dissertation in 2019. Currently, she holds a Candidate of Philological Sciences degree and works as an Associate Professor at the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology. She is the author of more than 100 scientific articles and methodological manuals.

Mahmudova Firuza Kasymovna
Senior Lecturer of the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology
Born on April 22, 1954, in Dushanbe. From 1961 to 1971, she studied at Secondary School No. 40 in Dushanbe. From 1971 to 1976, she studied at Tajik State University named after V.I. Lenin. After graduating from the university, she worked for two years at Secondary School No. 17. From 1978 to 1990, she was a junior researcher at the Research Institute of Pedagogical Sciences. From 1982 to 1985, she pursued postgraduate studies at the Research Institute of Pedagogical Research of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR. From 1990 to 2008, she worked as a senior lecturer at the Department of General Linguistics at the Tajik State Institute of Languages. Since February 2008, she has been working at Tajik National University.
She is the author of more than 40 scientific articles. Together with Russian scholars from St. Petersburg, she participated in the adaptation of Russian language textbooks for Russian schools. During her work at TNU, she has served as the Secretary of the Academic Council and Chairperson of the Women’s Council. For many years, she has been the curator of academic groups.

Buranova Zulfiya Abdulkhakimovna
Assistant of the Department of General Linguistics and Comparative Typology
Born on April 1,
1971, in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic. She is Uzbek by nationality and holds a
higher education degree. In 1993, she graduated from the Tajik State Institute
of Languages named after S. Ulugzoda (now the Moscow University of Languages
named after S. Ulugzoda), Faculty of Russian Language and Literature,
specializing in Philology — Teacher of Russian Language and Literature.
